If faciety was a word
I would use it all up
Make careful use of its subtleties
Artfully convey my message
With a calm and buoyant air.
So make no mistake and,
let detractors be damned.
Make up whole sentence patterns
Framed carefully around these bastard
ghosts of our vocabulary –
Clean and clear and kind.
But as it sits stilted on the tongue
Refusing neither to give nor go
I am left with awkward words
That weigh heavy on my heart.
I know of no reason why the words of our fathers
Should ever be used up.
